THE TOUR AT A GLANCE

Situated at only about 4 miles from the sea coast, at 12 and ½ miles from Nice and at 600 feet high, the lovely village of Saint Paul is a perfect example of what is like a “village of Provence” and to go there is a good way to discover the beautiful country side of the French Riviera.

Strolling around the pedestrian streets you will discover the famous ramparts, still intact, built on the XVI century under the French King Francis the II and the tower, remain of the older ramparts of XIV century. In fact Saint Paul from 1388 (when the county of Nice switched his allegiance from Provence to the County of Savoy) become an important border stronghold. You’ll discover the collegiate church (XIV th-XVIII th) of Saint Paul and the astonish decoration of the chapel of the white penitents brotherhood, restored by the Belgian artist Folon, at the beginning of 2000.   

Today the village is international knew because the contemporary art foundation, opened in 1964, by the art traders the couple Marguerite and Aimé Maeght and the many art galleries around the village. In fact, from the beginning of XX century, the village was one of the favourite places of artists, writers, poets, singers such us: Paul Signac, Raoul Dufy and Chaïm Soutine, Marc Chagall, Georges Braques, Fernand Leger, Matisse, Jean- Michel Folon , James Baldwin, Jacques Prévert, Yves Montand & Simone Signoret that loved spent time there to enjoy the peace and the Mediterranean climate and light, working or playing with bowls together. 

They usually met at the metical restaurant and hostel of Paul Roux, today called La Colombe d’or, just at the entrance of the Village.
